SMA Technologie AG was founded as an independent company out of Kassel's University in 1981 with the vision to develop and produce intelligent computer-based control systems for decentralized energy supply. This vision resulted in sophisticated products that are fail-safe and extremely reliable. Especially an energy supply system has to guarantee long-term trouble-free operation.

Due to our know-how from 20 years of experience in the development and fabrication of system technology for photovoltaic, wind energy and combined power generation plants, continuous product improvements and the use of absolutely new technologies, SMA is a pioneer in the field of solar technology. The close cooperation with the ISET (Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik) in the field of research resulted in innovations that have set standards specifically for decentralized power supply systems.

With the „Sunny Boy“ inverter we are worldwide market leader in the field of innovative device technology for the use of renewable energy sources. Private, commercial and institutional owners of solar power plants rely on our photovoltaic inverters and the numerous possibilities of a wide range of different communication systems. Due to our own ultramodern electronics manufacturing we can ensure the quality, reliability, and up-to-date technology of the components we are developing .

In addition, our customers benefit from extensive synergies out of the cooperation with the field of industrial computers. Extremely complex control units that fulfill highest demands on ruggedness, reliability and long-term availability within different industrial plants and vehicles are developed in this field. Our long-standing experience in the field of power electronic components and computer-based systems in our business unit Railway Technology enables SMA to design and equip the electrical systems of entire trains.
