South Korea´s largest PV plant is located in Taean, in the South Chungcheong province. In operation since 2008, it generates a maximum nominal power of 14 MWp - enough to supply the electricity needs of around 8,000 households.

Spanning a surface area of 300,000 square meters, the plant comprises approximately 70,000 PV modules manufactured by Conergy, REC B.P. Solar and Schott Solar, as well as 28 inverters from the SMA Sunny Central 500HE range. Thanks to the plant, around 7,800 tonnes of CO2 are saved each and every year.

One of the particular challenges presented itself in the form of the short timeframe that LG Solar Energy, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Korean LG Group, set for the construction of the PV power station. The South Korean government awarded a state grant for the project on the understanding that such an ambitious deadline would be met.

»The PV plant in Taean was our first project of this kind. The fact that we only had a total of three months to construct it made it all the more important to be able to count on SMA´s expertise and know-how from the outset. Extremely close cooperation was a key factor in the successful and timely implementation of the plant. From plant design right through to commissioning, SMA was involved at every stage. The annual "Service Tour" that SMA offers in South Korea deserves a special mention in this regard. This option of a comprehensive "pre-service" gave us the opportunity to detect and exploit all of the power potentials of the PV power station at a very early stage«
