SMA Wins ees Award and Intersolar Award in the Category “Outstanding Solar Projects”

SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) was recognized twice at this year’s Intersolar Europe in Munich. The Sunny Boy Storage 2.5 battery inverter won the ees Award. In addition, SMA received the Intersolar Award in the category “Outstanding Solar Projects” in recognition of its photovoltaic diesel hybrid system on the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius.

“We are very happy to have received these two awards; it once again underlines our high level of innovative prowess,” said SMA Chief Technology Officer Jürgen Reinert. “With our efficient system solutions across all power classes, we are successfully driving the energy transition forward.”

Sunny Boy Storage: Maximum flexibility for new and existing systems
The Sunny Boy Storage 2.5 is the SMA solution for high-voltage batteries like the Powerwall from Tesla Energy. With a charge and discharge power of 2.5 kW, it is perfectly suited to handling the electricity demand of a private household. SMA is the only provider that can currently offer an AC-coupled system for high-voltage batteries. With the Sunny Boy Storage, customers benefit from markedly reduced system and installation costs and flexible applications. Thanks to the AC coupling, the battery inverter can be easily and cost-effectively integrated into new and existing PV systems. PV system operators can therefore make themselves more independent from electric utility companies and increasing electricity costs by using as much self-generated solar power in their homes as possible.

St. Eustatius: SMA sets a good example for a sustainable power supply in the Caribbean
The photovoltaic diesel hybrid system on the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius was commissioned by SMA’s subsidiary SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH in March 2016 after only nine months of construction. It allows a more sustainable energy supply to the island with the status of “Special Municipality” within the Netherlands. Previously, the island´s power supply was fully based on diesel gensets. Through the integration of around 2 MWp of solar power and 1 MW of battery power with the SMA Fuel Save Controller 2.0, the electric utility company Statia Utility Company (STUCO) now saves more than 800,000 liters of diesel fuel and 2,200 tons of CO2 per year.
