Sunny Central UP: SMA Launches the World’s Most Powerful Central Inverter

With an output of 4.6 MW, the new Sunny Central UP is the world’s most powerful inverter for central PV power plants. SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) has thus succeeded in increasing the power output of its currently largest central inverter by more than 50%. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the number of inverters in large PV projects with 1,500 V of DC voltage. This will lead to a considerable decrease in operating costs. The new Sunny Central UP is the first central inverter to feature a fully integrated hardware and software solution for including storage solutions to easily connect DC battery storage systems without additional components.

“With the new Sunny Central UP, SMA is helping to create a situation where the share of electricity from photovoltaics will play a central role in the future energy supply,” said Boris Wolff, executive vice president of the Utility business unit at SMA. “Sustainable and efficient PV power plant solutions from SMA with the new Sunny Central UP offer EPC companies, operators and investors higher energy yields and more flexibility in implementing projects and considerably lower the operating costs in large PV power plant projects.”

Maximum design flexibility for 1,500 V PV projects
With an output of 4.6 MW, the Sunny Central UP is the largest central inverter on the market. With integrated solutions for coupling both AC-linked storage systems and DC battery storage systems, it provides excellent design flexibility for PV power plants in the megawatt class. Depending on the project requirements, storage solutions can be connected within the solar power plant on the DC side, the AC side or both — directly during construction of the power plant or during its subsequent expansion.

The Sunny Central UP is currently being showcased at the Renewable Energy India Expo 2018 and is available for order. Further information can be found here.
