Owners of PV systems that use the Home Connect app will be able to use their self-generated solar energy even more efficiently to operate their home appliances from the multi-brand company BSH Hausgeräte. As the central control unit of the SMA Smart Home, the Sunny Home Manager plans the use of appliances in line with users’ needs. Via the FlexStart function of the Home Connect app, users specify the time period and program in which appliances such as the washing machine and dishwasher operate. The Sunny Home Manager determines how much power the PV system will produce over the next few hours by analyzing Internet weather forecasts. The energy manager also knows the typical consumption patterns of the household, for example that a proportion of the self-generated PV power will always be required for cooking at midday. Based on this information, it creates an operational schedule for optimal use of the surplus PV power, starting the washing machine and other appliances accordingly. The increase in self-consumption as a result reduces users’ electricity bills in real terms, making the users more independent from rising electricity prices.
“Together with BSH, this is the first time we are testing the EEBus communication standard in practice,” explained Martin Volkmar, Product Manager in the SMA Residential business unit. “The EEBus connects the Sunny Home Manager, as the energy manager, to home appliances made by the Bosch and Siemens brands so that all the relevant energy management data can be exchanged. The more appliance manufacturers that introduce the EEBus standard, the simpler and more all-encompassing household energy management will become. If everyone is speaking the same language, this allows for the best possible coordination of all appliances in the system and permits the most effective energy cost savings.”
