Kanowna Solar Farm – 9 MW

New South Wales 2019

The 9MW Kanowna Solar Farm is located near Moree in New South Wales. For this project SMA supplied two Sunny Central 3000-EV DC Coupled inverter into one integrated MV Power Station MVPS6000-20. The plant was commissioned and connected to Essential Energy in September 2019. The plant owner applied automatic exemption generating system* within the National Electricity Market (NEM) SMA can provide inverter active power limitation setting technical clarification to Essential Energy under the owner’s arrangement.

It is one of the first solar farms that uses both DC optimisers and DC coupled battery architecture for central solution. The 3rd party DC optimisers are used for maximising the energy yield of PV array production. The DC coupled battery is expected in the second phase of the plant expansion. SMA also supplied a Hybrid Controller, currently it controls the power output of the solar and later on it will control the DC coupled battery storage. With Sunny Central DC Coupled ready inverter, SMA will supply the DC-DC converter, DPS-500, for the second phase.

The solar farm also consists of Belectric PEG system that places the almost 28,000 solar panels at less that a metre high, over just under seven hectares. The estimated annual solar energy production is around 13,500 MWh and reducing CO2 by approximately 12,500 tons every year.
